My wife and I will be in Connecticut/Massachusetts from December 24th until January 1st, and we are planning to tour the best of the area's coffee culture. When I lived in CT, I was pretty blind to the good stuff, largely sticking to the "Big S." Below is my "Hit List" for places to visit while home in New England:
1) Blue State Coffee (Wall St. in New Haven, CT) / Reviews
I've heard of Blue State's espresso from friends in the industry, and we live in Oklahoma! This sounds like a solid place to get some coffee, with a largely student-oriented atmosphere from what a review says on Yelp. I just might walk out with a bag or two of espresso... :)
2) Koffee (Audubon St. in New Haven, CT) / Reviews
A Nutella latté sounds amazing! My wife will be all over this like yellow on butter, so I bet that we'll be making a detour while we're in town to visit this house, too. From how it's described online ("Bohemian", "funky", "fresh baked goods"), it sounds a lot like my hometown favorite, Gray Owl.
3) Northampton Coffee (Pleasant St. in Northampton, MA) / Reviews
This place looks like it might be a coffee elitist's hangout from some of the reviews... Frowning on decaf, atmosphere like a vacuum, staff that could start the next round of Global Cooling! I bet they'd be annoyed if I ordered a CaffĂ© Freddo! (Please don't stone me!) I wouldn't order one of those, but I know people who would—and would be refused service at places like Doubleshot in Tulsa, OK, Coffee Slingers in OKC, and probably at Northampton Coffee. I'm not so sure about this place, but I'm going to chance it in the name of Science!
4) Uncommon Grounds aka "River Bend Cafe" (Stockbridge Rd. in Great Barrington, MA) / Reviews
Wow, just seeing the video over at BerkshireNow.com makes me feel like I'm at home again... Just from the looks of it, this shop looks like it is a thoroughly Berkshire-esque establishment. This is one place that I'm definitely going to have to get to while we're up in Stockbridge at the Norman Rockwell Museum.
We will make a concerted effort to drink our way through New England this Christmas, which will include visiting most, if not all, of the above locations. When we do, I will post a travel log with pictures and our review of the shop and its coffee. Merry Christmas to you all, and we will look forward to seeing you all on the other side of a coffee cup!
